MITEF Think Tank Session: The Future of TV
Tue Jan 14, 2014 5:30 PM
TiVo, Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, Chromecast, Apps, and Smart TV have irrevocably changed the world of television. Every innovation has placed the audience a little more firmly in the driver’s seat and given them more encompassing control. Today, everyone expects to decide exactly what programming they want to consume as well as how and where they want to consume it.

This challenges traditional views on network programming and poses entirely new questions: How can audiences discover and navigate the wealth of content? How can the content be smartly enhanced to allow for unique viewing experiences and revenue generation.

It is up to the brightest minds in technology to find solutions to these exciting challenges--and how to profit from that. MITEF-NYC is therefore introducing a new event format. In a highly engaged and interactive setting, a Think Tank session will gather ideas and concrete answers on how technology and innovation can shape the future of television.

Conversations will revolve around the following questions:
- What are current trends within the Television industry in the areas of content discovery, navigation, and enhancement?
- What innovations are already out there that could be reframed to address those trends?
- What are entirely new thoughts on how tech innovation can positively impact this industry?
- How to carve the industry into digestible chunks that can be addressed with tech innovation?
- What do consumers demand and what are they ready for?
- What is the industry ready to accept?

We invite seasoned and fresh innovators in the space as well as representatives from within the television industry. They will share a snapshot of existing challenges and innovations in the space. Bright minds with an interest in the changes in television and a willingness to actively contribute to the session are welcome.

***Admission will be limited to facilitate high participation.– Some places will be held for attendees with significant involvement in TV or TV/Internet convergence (see below).

***Qualified attendees are invited to provide a short introduction to the organizers so that they can be identified and featured in discussion. Please email to [email protected] with the subject "Think Tank Participation." If registration has been closed, some reserved places may still be available.

***All free MITEF-NYC Member registrants will be required to re-confirm attendance between January 6 and 10, and all registrants are requested to notify us if they will not attend, so that seats can be made available to others. Financing Technology Companies at Different Stages
Thu Dec 5, 2013 5:30 PM
Rapidly growing companies require infusions of capital at various stages of growth. The MIT enterprise Forum and the MIT Sloan Club of New York have collaborated to jointly offer this full-spectrum view of the financing of technology companies. Most companies start with sweat equity, augmented by friends and family money. After that, angels are an appropriate source of funds. From there, venture capital may be required for growth that could result in an IPO. The vast majority of successful companies will gain liquidity not via an IPO but will exit via M&A. Each class of investors will have a different valuation of a young company because of their different perspectives of risk and potential. Understanding their perspectives is critical to funding your company or making a sound investment in a venture which will require future growth funds.

Come join us at the MIT Enterprise Forum and listen in to this panel of speakers at different stages of investing: angel investors, early VC, late VC and M&A, and public investing professional who provide the ultimate context for the capital supply chain. Learn what is appropriate for your company or your investments in order to understand the dynamics of the range of investors in technology companies.

Entrepreneurship NYC: The Role of Universities in the NYC Ecosystem
Thu Nov 7, 2013 5:30 PM
Universities have long been integral to regional economic development. For example, the Morrill Act of 1862, which funded land-grant institutions, was a response to the industrial revolution. Universities also have a long tradition of contributing to the general welfare, which can be exemplified in the “Wisconsin Idea” that dates back to the late 19th century.

The enormous impact universities have on regional economies can be clearly illustrated by examples such as Stanford in Silicon Valley and MIT in the Greater Boston area. In New York City, the role of universities extends well beyond research and technology transfer. Local universities have been integral to the success of New York’s ‘New Economy’ by playing a special role in our entrepreneurial ecosystem. This event will explore that unique role through a dynamic panel discussion followed by an interactive session with the audience.

Join us with these knowledgeable speakers and find out:
- What does this mean for your startup or company?
- For Early and Expansion Venture Capital?
- What are the best practices?
- How can you ride this massive, disruptive wave of financing?

Equity Crowdsourcing: Financial Big Bang or Armageddon?
Mon Oct 21, 2013 5:30 PM
The last time Congress materially changed the rules around company fund-raising was 1934. Some argued at the time that these rules were too punitive and extended the depression.

80 years later, amidst the longest jobs recession since the Great Depression, Congress has passed, and the SEC implementing, new “general solicitation” rules for companies to raise money. But this time communication of such raises will be instantaneous and be spread socially. Some call it the end of the world as fraud could befall senior citizens, widows and orphans-- as well as Facebook and Twitter friends and family. Others call it the beginning of a new venture world, where entrepreneurs are freer to raise money legally from their friends, customers and strangers, who aren`t millionaires - just like large corporations do in the stock market. Over 500 new platforms have been created to take advantage of this wave. Millions have been raised.

Join us with these knowledgeable speakers and find out:
- What does this mean for your startup or company?
- For Early and Expansion Venture Capital?
- What are the best practices?
- How can you ride this massive, disruptive wave of financing?

Greenhill SAVP and the MIT Enterprise Forum of New York City invite you to an exciting event on cloud computing, SaaS and the enterprise on Tuesday, May 18th from 5:30-8:30pm. As we look back at some of the great innovations in B2B Software, the Software as a Service delivery platform will likely rank at the top. Salesforce.com was an early pioneer of Software as a Service (SaaS), launched its online CRM tool in 2000 and generated a billion dollars in revenue 9 years later.

Today the on-demand model continues to evolve rapidly as the distinction between applications, data, and infrastructure blurs through the various components of Cloud Computing: from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), and Platform as a Service (PaaS) to SaaS.
