The MIT Enterprise Forum, Inc. presents a rare insider's look into the ever increasing role of Angel Investing in early stage companies and technologies. "Angel Groups in Action" will feature an interactive round-table discussion with a panel of angels and entrepreneurs funded by angels.

 

The open discussion will address practices and principles of angel investing, including:

• the truth behind common myths about angel investors;
• common mistakes entrepreneurs make when approaching angels;
• the evolution of angel investing and how groups can and do organize effectively today; and
• the future trends of angel investments.

NY Panel Speaker Biographies

David Rose is an entrepreneurial executive and investor with extensive experience in high technology and communications, angel investments, finance and government. Mr. Rose was co-founder and Chairman of The Computer Classroom, one of the world's first computer training firms, and spent over ten years developing technology-enhanced commercial and residential real estate in New York, Washington, DC and Boston. As Chairman of New York Angels, and through his investment fund, Rose Tech Ventures, Mr. Rose provides capital and management expertise to promising early stage companies. He has personally raised over $75 million in venture, strategic and institutional capital. Mr. Rose is Chairman of Urban HotSpots, a public access Wireless Internet Service Provider. Prior to founding AirMedia Corporation in 1988, for which he served as CEO for over ten years, his career included over fifteen years in real estate development, government, teaching and urban planning. He was named by Inc. magazine to the 1998 Inc 500 list as CEO of one of the fastest growing private companies in America. Red Herring magazine has described him as "a patriarch of New York's Silicon Alley" and Crain's New York Business named him one of the City's 25 most influential technology executives.


Samer Hamadeh is co-founder & CEO of Vault Inc., a company recently recognized by Deloitte & Touche as a "Fast 50" company. Vault's properties include www.Vault.com, the Vault Online Career Library, and over 100 print guides such as The College Career Bible, Top Internships, and Guide to Law Firm Diversity Programs. Before co-founding Vault, Samer was an associate at the Los Angeles management consulting firm LEK Consulting, where he focused on corporate and business strategy. Prior to that, Samer co-founded and managed a customized-textbook printing company, worked at the Chevron Corporation, and co-authored The Internship Bible and America's Top Internships (Random House/Princeton Review). Samer lectures extensively on the subject of careers and recruiting and has spoken at over 100 institutions and conventions, including Stanford Business School, Harvard University, UCLA, and New York University. Samer also provides media commentary on the subject of employment and has contributed his insights to nearly 200 media outlets, including CNN, The New York Times, and Fortune. A David Rockefeller Fellow, Samer holds a BS in chemistry and an MS in chemical engineering from Stanford University.


Stephanie Hanbury-Brown spent 20 years in financial services in Sydney, London and New York. The majority of her career was with J.P. Morgan where she headed several global businesses including positions as Global Head of Futures and Options, Head of International Private Banking, COO of Global Equities and Head of eCommerce. She recently founded Golden Seeds LLC, which targets women-owned businesses and has commenced operations with a forum for angel investors and a consulting practice. She obtained a Batchelor of Arts from the University of Sydney. Currently she retains board positions with Foster Wheeler Limited, Design2Launch and Morganae Foundation.

Chris Saxman was a Principal and founding member of AIG Highstar Capital, a $400 million private equity fund sponsored by AIG Global Investment Corporation. Earlier at AIG he served as an investment analyst in the Latin American Private Equity Group following a stint with SAI Consultores in Mexico City. Mr. Saxman was also a co-founder and owner of The Emerging Markets Companion, an Internet company that attracted 1,000 daily readers within its first nine months. Previously he served as trader with The Weston Group and Brown Brothers Harriman & Company. He received his MBA in Finance and Economics from the Stern School of Business at New York University, and his BA in Economics and Government from Cornell University.


Kenneth Kay was founder and CEO of ebudgets.com, an ASP provider of budgeting services, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2001. He is presently an investor and active member of management for GlobalSubmit, a provider of software and training to healthcare companies seeking regulatory approvals for their products. Mr. Kay has an M.B.A. and a B.A. in Economics from University of Chicago.


Christopher Starr is an experienced venture capitalist, formerly at Lenfest Capital and the Eastern Technology Fund. Previously, he worked for such companies as Morgan Stanley, Merck, Innovation Factory, and the law firm of Stevens & Lee. In 2001, PhillyTech magazine selected Mr. Starr as one of the "30 Under 30" business executives to watch, and in 2002, the Philadelphia Business Journal recognized him as one of the region's "40 Under 40" young business leaders. He earned a B.B.A., magna cum laude, and M.B.A. from the Temple University School of Business, and a J.D. from the Temple University School of Law.


Edward D. Gorkes founded a chain of retail video specialty stores which received the "Sarasota Small Business of the Year" award in 1992, and was later sold to Movie Gallery (NASDAQ: MOVI) in 1994. He continued with Movie Gallery as a regional manager covering Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, and subsequently went on to create two additional video store chains which were also acquired in separate transactions. Additional areas of expertise include selling medical diagnostic assays and instrumentation to health care professionals for Abbott Laboratories in the New York City district (Mr. Gorkes was a ranked top producer). He also served as an officer in the Unites States Army.Current activities involve private investing with a concentration in real estate, retail and biotechnology companies. Mr. Gorkes received his M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a B.S. degree in Business Management from the Pennsylvania State University.


Broadcast Panel Speaker Biographies

Edward B. Roberts '57 is the David Sarnoff Professor of Management of Technology at MIT's Sloan School. His Entrepreneurs in High Technology won the Association of American Publishers Award for Outstanding Book in Business and Management. Professor Roberts is Founder and Chair of the MIT Entrepreneurship Center, and he is actively involved as a co-founder, board member, and angel investor in many high-tech startups. He has four degrees from MIT, in engineering, economics, and management.


James Geshwiler GM '00 is co-founder and chairman of the Angel Capital Association, fostering best practices and forming new angel groups across the country. He is also Managing Director of CommonAngels, and has participated in funding 18 companies through over 55 rounds of financing totaling over $100 million since 1999. Geshwiler is a contributing author to Cutting-Edge Practices in American Angel Investing, and has published papers through the Kauffman Foundation. He earned his MBA from the MIT Sloan School.


Daniel Roach (moderator) is currently with the CPA firm Brown & Brown L.L.P., where he works with a portfolio of technology and services clients. Prior to his financial advisory work, he was a Managing Director for Garage Technology Venture, a Palo Alto, CA based early stage venture fund and investment bank. Roach received his bachelor's from the University of Rochesterand his MBA from Northeastern University.

Jeffrey Sohl is Director of the Center for Venture Research at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire, and a Professor of Entrepreneurship and Decision Sciences. He has presented his angel research around the globe and has written for numerous academic and business journals. Sohl also sits on the New Hampshire Governor's Advisory Committee on Capital Formation.


Jerry Schaufeld has a wealth of experience in entrepreneurship, management, and funding of technology-based companies. Schaufeld recently completed a term as director of the Slater Fund, a venture development firm. He was co-founder of Phoenix Controls, a member of the Navigator Technology Ventures Board and Launchpad Angels, and co-founder of Cherrystone Angels. In addition, Schaufeld was a founder and the first Chairman of the MIT Enterprise Forum.
